Letter to James Thomas, regarding mission to Germany for the Confederacy [manuscript] 1863 Apr. 18. 1863.

Schele de Vere is to be sent on a "foreign mission to Germany" and will travel on "a Government vessel to Nassau." From Nassau, he must pay his own passage. Schele de Vere asks Thomas to inform him if tobacco would find "a ready sale at Nassau" and what the probable price to be obtained would be. The collection also includes a letter from Harry Clemons, 1929 Mar. 25, to Elisabeth Cutting, concerning "the name of the University of Virginia professor who had a conference with Napoleon III." Clemons concludes the professor was most likely Schele de Vere.
